“As a daily painter Kelly paints every
day. She
joined the daily painting movement several years ago and says that
painting every day helps her to maintain artistic discipline; it fosters
creativity, improves her skills and brings her great joy. Very much taken with subjects of everyday life
from landscapes to fruit and vegetables to animals, she works in watercolor,
oil, and acrylic. Working in multiple
mediums keeps Kelly from being bored and gives her a great deal of flexibility
in subject matter. Often painting from photos in the studio, she still loves to
paint in en Plein-air whenever possible. Kelly had two successful solo shows in Hopkinsville, KY
in the mid 1990’s. Since moving to Virginia she has
participated in juried shows at the Blue Ridge Arts Council (BRAC) in Front
Royal each year from 2000 – 2010. At the
2000 exhibit, she was awarded Best-in-Show for a work in pastel and was awarded
a Solo Show at BRAC in October 2000. In
the fall of 2002, Kelly and two other local artists presented a show at BRAC.
August 2005 Kelly exhibited her very successful “Dog Days of Summer” show for
the benefit of the Blue Ridge Arts Council and the Humane Society of Warren
County. In March 2006 the Blue Ridge
Arts Council named Kelly the “Arts Citizen of the Year”. At the 2006 BRAC member show Kelly was
awarded 3rd prize for a watercolor painting.
She also has displayed work at The Art Group in Mt.
Jackson, and was featured artist there
in June-July 2006, and at the Mill in Millwood,
VA. Her work is currently on display at Delilah’s
Gallery in Front Royal. Kelly is a native of Georgia where she received a BS in
Secondary Education from Georgia Southern College. She is currently a full-time artist. Prior to that she worked sixteen years in the
non-profit world with Chambers of Commerce in Kentucky
and Virginia.
Tapping into her teaching experience, Kelly teaches art to children and adults
at the Blue Ridge Arts Council in Front Royal as well as giving private
lessons. She was selected in 2011 to
teach an Art Residency at the elementary schools in Warren County
for the 175th Anniversary Celebration. Kelly is a firm believer in
public/community service and is very active in many organizations in the community. She served on the Board of the Pennyroyal
Arts Council, Hopkinsville,
KY, and is past President of the
Blue Ridge Arts Council Board in Front Royal, VA. Kelly is very active dog rescue groups around
the country often providing them with art for fund-raising. Kelly studied extensively with Barbara
Gardner, a well-known artist in Kentucky,
and has taken workshops with nationally known instructors Joyce Pike, Pat
Weaver, Morgan Samuel Price and Robert Burridge.
Kelly loves rescue dogs, especially her
3-year-old Lab-basset rescue named Jed and year old dachshund-Airedale mix, Lincoln. She enjoys hiking, reading almost anything,
and the study and observation of politics.”
